How to Transfer Money from Singapore to Malaysia Safely
Property deposits and progressive payments should move through traceable, licensed channels — this protects you if a dispute arises and satisfies your lawyer’s and the bank’s source-of-funds checks.
Preferred channels
A bank telegraphic transfer (TT) from your Singapore bank to the developer’s or your lawyer’s stakeholder/client account, or a licensed remittance provider, are the standard safe routes. Keep every remittance advice and receipt.
Pay into a stakeholder account, not a personal account
Booking fees and deposits should be paid into the developer’s designated account or your conveyancing lawyer’s client/stakeholder account — never to a personal bank account of an agent or introducer.
What to avoid
Avoid unlicensed money changers or informal “agents” for large sums, and never carry undeclared cash across CIQ. Large cross-border cash movements are subject to declaration requirements on both sides.
Currency timing
SGD/MYR moves daily. If your payment schedule spans months, consider whether to convert progressively or use a rate-lock service rather than guessing the exchange rate at each instalment.
