Is It Better to Rent or Buy in Johor Bahru as a Singaporean?

This question usually hides a different one: how certain are you about your time horizon in Johor Bahru? Renting suits an uncertain or short horizon; buying suits a horizon long enough to absorb transaction costs and, ideally, tenure benefits like freehold.

Run the breakeven math before deciding on feeling alone. Add up stamp duty, legal fees and other one-off purchase costs, then compare that total against the rent you would otherwise pay over a comparable period — the number of years to breakeven is more useful than a generic "buy is always better" claim.

Consider optionality too. Renting keeps you flexible if your Singapore-JB routine changes; owning gives you control over renovations, holding a freehold asset, and no landlord-driven notice to vacate — but it also means carrying maintenance fees and market risk.

If you are leaning toward buying mainly for the RTS/CIQ commute story, revisit our Singapore–JB & RTS buyer checklist and test your actual travel times before locking in either decision.
